ISKSAA ABERDEEN UK TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP 2025

I am profoundly grateful to the International Shoulder & Knee Society of Arthroscopy Advancement (ISKSAA), Professor Lalit Maini, and Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj for selecting me for the prestigious Travelling Shoulder Fellowship. It was an immense privilege to spend the month of June at the renowned Woodend Hospital in Aberdeen under the expert guidance of Mr. Kapil Kumar and his esteemed colleagues.

This fellowship was an exceptional, concept-changing experience that significantly enhanced my diagnostic and surgical understanding of shoulder pathologies. Under the dedicated mentorship of Mr. Kapil Kumar, I was exposed to a high volume of complex shoulder surgeries. I had the invaluable opportunity to observe and assist in a wide array of procedures, including:

  • Arthroplasty: Reverse, Hemi, and Total Anatomical Shoulder Replacements.
  • Arthroscopy: Rotator Cuff Repairs, Remplissage procedures, Biceps Tenodesis, and Subacromial Decompression.

A particular highlight was attending Mr. Kumar's outpatient clinics. His systematic approach to clinical examination, his methodical diagnostic thought process, and his exceptional skill in patient counselling provided a masterclass in holistic patient care. He generously explained his pre-operative planning, including the intricacies anatomical variation in individuals & tailor made approach towards individuals patients He also guided me through every surgical step in the theatre, offering innumerable practical tips and tricks.

The learning extended beyond the shoulder. I am also thankful to the other consultants at Woodend Hospital—Mr. Khan, Mr. Munro, Mr. Neilly, and Mr. Cairns—for allowing me to observe & assist their diverse practices. This broadened my exposure to Robotic Hip and Knee Arthroplasties, Direct Anterior Approach Hip Arthroplasty, Elbow Arthroscopy, Revision Arthroplasties, and various Foot & Ankle surgeries.

Beyond the outstanding academic curriculum, the fellowship was made truly memorable by the warmth and hospitality of the entire team. Mr. Kumar is not only a fantastic surgeon and teacher but also a wonderful human being who ensured I never felt out of place. He, along with the other consultants, created an incredibly welcoming and collaborative environment.

My time in Scotland was also enriched by memorable weekend trips exploring the stunning landscapes of the Highlands, the historic charm of Edinburgh and Stonehaven, and a visit to London. These experiences provided a perfect balance and created memories of a lifetime.

My sincerest thanks to Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj and ISKSAA for this incredible initiative. I extend my deepest gratitude to Mr. Kapil Kumar for his painstaking efforts to make this fellowship so fruitful and truly unforgettable. This experience has been invaluable, and I highly recommend this fellowship to any orthopaedic surgeon seeking to elevate their skills in shoulder surgery and beyond.
