ISKSAA TEESIDE UK TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP 2022
At the outset I would like to convey my regards to Dr P S Bajaj and Dr Lalit Maini for giving me this opportunity of North Tees Hospital Upper Limb Fellowship 2023. I would also like to convey my sincere thanks to the mentor Mr Rajesh Nanda for taking time out for us and making a detailed schedule for us to make the best use of our limited time there.. I would also like to acknowledge Mr Liow and Mr Jeavons (Consultants NHS) for their continuous guidance and support during the fellowship program. My fellowship colleague Dr Karthi Cumaran happened to be a great friend, always full with ideas and an excellent explorer.
I flew to Newcastle airport from Mumbai on 23rd Sep 2023 and then travelled by train to Stockton where we stayed for next couple of weeks. Weather was a little chilly but comfortable and I was mesmerized by the countryside beauty of UK. It’s an amazing town and as I was travelling with my family we had booked an apartment for 02 weeks from where everything was at just few minutes’ walk. Connectivity by local transport was never an issue.
We started our fellowship on Monday morning with introduction to faculty, morning fracture meet followed by entry into Operation Theaters. Mr Nanda was kind enough to to organize everything for us and make us feel comfortable in foreign surroundings. He is a thorough gentleman, a man of few words and an excellent teacher with impeccable surgical skills.
As we were attached with the Upper Limb unit we got to see a fair number of surgeries like RSA, Total Shoulder Replacement, Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff repair along with complex upper limb trauma cases. Though we did not scrub for any of the cases but each of the consultants really took great pains in explaining all the procedures as well as tips and tricks of performing them successfully. It was really a great experience for us to see the level of professional expertise and competence as well as to familiarize ourselves with the functioning of the NHS.
We had long discussions about professional matters with all the Consultants who were kind enough to guide us further in our career with plethora of experience.
A special word of thanks for Dr Nanda who really took great care of us and showed us all the beautiful places closeby like Durrham, Seaton Carew etc and even hosted a dinner for our families at his private mansion as well as at a great Indian restaurant.
Northern part of England is a stunning place to be in. We even had a chance to visit Scotland as well as Newcastle.I spent last 3-4 days exploring London and finally, I flew back to India from with fond memories of one of the best places I ever visited.
