REPORT ON ISKSAA-BIOTEK FELLOWSHIP 2019 UNDER DR. MANOJ METHA,SAAI HOSPITAL ,VADODRA
Introduction :
After award of the ISKSAA – Biotech fellowship the logistics was arranged by the biotech which enabled me to reach the city of Vadodra without any trouble on the forenoon of 8th of July 2019. I Checked in the accommodation provided and rushed to SAAI Hospital to meet Dr. Manoj Metha with the help of the local biotech team. Dr. Manoj Metha briefed me on the regular routine followed in the hospital and my role as an observer/fellow. I was duly helped by Dr. Nelai Kumar who was undergoing his 6 months fellowship with Dr. Manoj Metha.
The Daily Routines at SAAI Hospital :
SAAI hospital is a fully functional Orthopaedic hospital in Vadodra exclusively for sports injury and Rehab & Dr. Manoj is the Chief consultant with more than 20 years of experience in the field of Arthroscopy & sports injury. The average OPD numbers was around 75-100 with 15 beds and 2 fully functional Operation theatres (I major & 1 minor OT) with an average of 4-5 cases per day. Apart from SAAI hospital Dr. Manoj Metha would take his fellows to assist cases in major corporate hospitals like Sterling Hospital & Tricolour Hospital. The day starts as early as 6am with a variety of cases ranging from simple primary ACL reconstruction to secondary graft rupture, screw breakage and secondary infections from as far as Rajasthan & Madya Pradesh and ends after seeing the post operative cases and evening OPD at around 9pm.
Teaching & Exposure :
Since Dr. Manoj Metha has been in the field of Arthroscopy and sports injury from very early days ( when only a handful of them were available in India)the stepwise process of teaching from very basic to recent trends was in a systemic way. Despite his busy schedule he would find time to teach as and when time permitted. Staring from basic anatomy to reading and interpreting MRI and clinical co-relation he taught a wide range of things which were practical & handy.
Few case Illustrations :
1) A case of graft rupture & secondary reconstruction using Peroneus tendon
2) A case of broken screw which was which was successfully extracted and revised with bioscew
Learning by doing :
I was fortunate to learn a wide range of things right from graft harvest, preparation of the graft to tunnel preparation and final graft positioning in tunnel. I assisted for almost all the case during my short tenure from 8th July to 13th july 2019 which gave me confidence to perform surgeries after returning back to my parent institution
Thanks Giving:
I whole heartedly thank ISKSAA for providing this opportunity to me through BIOTEK. Special thanks to Biotek for helping me with the logistics. I also thank Dr. Manoj Metha guiding me all along and his team who were very friendly to an outsider like me. Dr. Manoj Metha is a simple and humble human being who despite his very busy schedule ensures to spend quality time with his fellows.
