This is indeed our pleasure to visit to Australia and work with some of the stalwarts in the field of Joint Replacement and Arthroscopy at Flinders University. And many thanks to ISKSAA for providing us such a wonderful opportunity.
- We were four fellows who were selected by ISKSAA through interviews held at ISKSAA conference 2018.Inteterviews were held by international faculty and it was a transparent process by which we were informed about the selection.
- Dr. Lalt Maini and Prof Jegan Krishnan and his secetary Ms.Sarah were our coordinators for the fellowship.I were constantly in touch with them via e-mails.I did all the formalities and paperwork in consultation with our coordinators.
- We arrived in London on 1st June 2019. We were pick up from the airport by Mr.Nick, who took us to an accommodation which was provided free of cost. Accommodation was comfortable and we had a full house with kitchen where we used to cook our own food.We had access to a beautiful lounge in the house where we could watch some tv shows and spend our evenings after work comfortably. The grocery shops were close by where we could shop for our daily needs. We were given 1000 Australian dollars each well which were enough for food, travel and other logistics.
- Flinders University Hospital-We started going to Flinders University from 3rd June. We met Prof Jegan Krishnan there. He was very helpful and very welcoming in his nature. After the first day at the hospital he took us out for a welcome dinner as well. There was a full schedule which was ready for us when we reached the hospital, which had plans for which surgeon to visit on what days.
- Consultants worked with: We had wonderful time with various consultants and they all were very helpful and knowledgeable in their respective fields. We had an excellent platform where we could discuss various topics with stalwarts like Prof Jegan Krishnan,Dr Mario Penta,Dr Ching Meng Ling,Dr Sunil P Reddy,Dr matthew Liptak.
- Surgeries observed: We had extensive exposure of various surgeries such as
- Primary Knee Arthroplasty
- Primary Hip Arthroplasty(cemented and uncemented)
- Revision Hip Arthroplasty
- Unicondylar Knee Arthroplasty
- Navigated Total Knee Replacement
- Shoulder Arthroscopy-bankart repair, mini open rotator cuff repair
- Knee Arthroscopy-Meniscus, ACL, Chondral lesion
- Learning : We could also imbibe meticulous pre-operative planning, different implants used in various surgeries, protocols for every surgery, post-operative protocols, rehabilitation protocols, data entry for the National Registry of Joints. It was quite an amazing experience and we wish to follow some of these principles and protocols in India.
- Suggestions: Overall it was a satisfactory trip, however we wish submit few points which can improve the recruitment rate and interest of fellows like us. Duration of fellowship: was short. It can be made for at least 03 months by which time all possible cases can be seen by the fellows.
