Fellowship Report BASK - ISKSAA Travelling Fellowship 2014-15
It was a great honour to be part of this wonderful fellowship programme. There were two of us, me and my colleague Dr. SurenderRawat to share this experience. We arrived at Newcastle upon Tyne airport on 8th March 2015. We were warmly received by Mr. SanjeevAnand. Besides being the fellowship co - ordinator he is a perfect gentleman and a great surgeon. We were accommodated at the hostel in Hartlepool University Hospital, which had excellent facilities.
On day 1 we went to the orthopaedic elective OT at North Tees Hospital where we observed two shoulder cases by Mr. Jeavsons - one type V AC joint disruption which was fixed with anchors and one arthroscopic subacromial decompression for shoulder impingement. We had a very interesting interaction with Mr. Aslam, consultant Anaesthetist at North Tees hospital, on the regional blocks. He was very kind to show us around the hospital and also arrange the meals for us that day. On the very evening we left for Telford for Nation Ligament Registry Meeting.
Thereafter we were enrolled for BASK Spring Meet 2015, which was a great experience. We met with Mr. Richard Parkinson, who is the president of BASK and attended all the lectures and even a mock trial on medical negligence. A wonderful banquet dinner was organised at Royal Airforce Museum at Cosford.
Then we travelled to Wirral, where we attended OT’s at Clatterbridge Hospital. We observed several TKR surgeries, ACL reconstructions over there with Mr. Harvey.
On the weekend we returned to Hartlepool and went to Nuffield Tees Hospital, where we met Mr. Tony Nargol, who is a pioneer in MOM hip arthroplasty research. It was wonderful to hear the rise and fall of MOM hip replacement and behind the scene story of the same. We observed a revision hip replacement and two Total knee replacements with him. We also met Mr. S. Maheswaran who showed us the tips and tricks for Uni Knee Replacement.
After some rest on Sunday, the next week was spent in the hospitals in Durham region. We witnessed plenty of cases this week including hip several arthroscopies with Mr. Anand, TKR surgeries with Mr. Cooke, Subacromial decompression with Mr. Liow, several arthroscopies and a revision hip replacement. We also attended a local orthopaedic group meeting at Lumley Castle, which was a very nice interactive session. We started packing for the departure on the weekend.
Overall it was an wonderful learning experience with great surgeons, which was extremely well organised and immensely satisfying. I’d like to thank team ISKSAA, Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj and Mr. SanjeevAnand for providing me with this wonderful opportunity and I’m sure this fellowship would enable me to provide even better standards of care and surgical technique to my patients.
