Under the Guidance of Dr. Jatinder Kumar Singla
Introduction:
The Max Mohali Travelling Arthroplasty Fellowship provided a unique opportunity to enhance my knowledge and practical skills in the field of joint replacement surgery. Arthroplasty, particularly hip and knee replacements, especially Unicondyalar knee arthroplasty .
Activities and Observations:
During the fellowship, I was involved in several key activities.
- Surgical Observations and Participation:
- I was fortunate to observe a range of arthroplasty surgeries, from Total hip & knee replacements , partial knee replacements and some complex trauma cases.
- Approach’s like subvastus & mid vastus was new for me .
- Under the guidance of Dr. Singla, I was able to actively assist in the operating room with his house fellows .
- Preoperative and Postoperative Management:
- Dr. Singla emphasized the importance of meticulous preoperative planning, including patient assessment, radiographic analysis, and selection of the appropriate implant. I was involved in pre-surgical consultations and observed how careful planning significantly impacts surgical outcomes.
- Postoperatively, I gained experience in monitoring patients’ recovery, managing pain, and implementing rehabilitation protocols to ensure optimal functional recovery and reduce complications like deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and infections.
- Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Protocols:
- One of the key aspects of the fellowship was learning about ERAS protocols that focus on improving patient recovery by reducing hospital stay and minimizing complications. I was involved in managing patients under these protocols, which include optimized anesthesia techniques, multimodal pain management, early mobilization, and nutritional support.
- Multidisciplinary Team Collaboration:
- Throughout the fellowship, I participated in multidisciplinary meetings where orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists, physiotherapists, and nursing staff discussed the management of complex arthroplasty .
Conclusion:
The Max Mohali Travelling Arthroplasty Fellowship, under the mentorship of Dr. Singla, has been an invaluable learning experience.I have gained a solid foundation in both the clinical and research aspects of arthroplasty, and I am confident that this fellowship will have a lasting impact on my career.
