ISKSAA BOSTAA TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP 2024
I am forever grateful to Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj and Dr. Lalit Maini for selecting me for the ISKSAA BOSTAA travelling fellowship in the UK. It has been a great privilege to be mentored by Mr. Sanjeev Anand, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Leeds Teaching Hospitals and Academic Secretary of BOSTAA. The fellowship lasted for two weeks, starting on November 11, 2024, and included free registration for the BOSTAA annual conference.
The BOSTAA annual conference took place on November 7 at Twickenham Rugby Stadium. It was a fantastic meeting themed around injuries in rugby, and I learned about recent advances and new instrumentation in arthroscopy. The guided tour of the largest rugby stadium in the world was a memorable experience. During my fellowship, I was assigned to three hospitals: Charing Cross Hospital, St. George's Hospital in London, and Fairfield Hospital in Bury. I had the opportunity to observe numerous cases related to knee arthroscopy, trauma, hand and wrist procedures, and deformity corrections. For the first two days, I worked under Mr. Rhidian Thomas, a knee and foot consultant at Charing Cross Hospital and the President of BOSTAA. He is a master in his field, and he discussed each case in detail, providing new insights into knee examination, graft selection for multi-ligamentous knee injuries, and postoperative care.
In the following week, I was mentored by Mr. Neil Jain, a sports medicine consultant at Fairfield Hospital and Wimslow Hospital and the Treasurer of BOSTAA. I gained invaluable experience in various surgical techniques and patient management under his guidance. I observed and learned many procedures, including different techniques for meniscal repairs, manipulation under anesthesia for frozen shoulder, and PRP techniques and indications. He was incredibly friendly and shared many useful tips and tricks for meniscal repair and shoulder arthroscopy. During the last week of my fellowship, I was under the mentorship of Ms. Shamim Umarji, a consultant orthopaedic hand and wrist surgeon at St. George's Hospital in London. She was very kind and ensured that I received full exposure to both elective and trauma cases. All the consultants at St. George's were exceptionally helpful in discussing and guiding us through their surgeries.
The weekends were free, allowing me to explore various places in London and Manchester. Cambridge is a beautiful city with a lot to see. I sincerely thank ISKSAA for this opportunity and look forward to the next one.
