Subject: Fellowship Completion Report – ISKSAA Aberdeen Travelling Fellowship in Shoulder Surgery

Dear Sir,
I am pleased to submit my report following the successful completion of the ISKSAA Aberdeen Travelling Fellowship in Shoulder Surgery under the mentorship of Mr. Kapil Kumar at Woodend Hospital, Aberdeen, Scotland.

The fellowship provided an outstanding opportunity to gain exposure to contemporary shoulder surgery, including both shoulder arthroscopy and shoulder arthroplasty. The experience was academically enriching and clinically rewarding, allowing me to observe a high-volume specialist shoulder practice and learn from a surgeon with exceptional expertise and patient-centered clinical skills.

One of the most valuable aspects of the fellowship was observing Mr. Kapil Kumar in the outpatient clinic. His systematic approach to patient evaluation, detailed history taking, focused clinical examination, and ability to arrive at an accurate provisional diagnosis were remarkable. Equally impressive was his ability to explain imaging findings, particularly MRI scans, to patients in a clear and understandable manner. His approach to discussing treatment options, surgical indications, expected outcomes, and rehabilitation protocols demonstrated excellent communication skills and reinforced the importance of patient education and shared decision-making in modern orthopaedic practice.

During the fellowship, I had the opportunity to observe:

  • 4 Shoulder Arthroplasty Procedures
  • 8 Shoulder Arthroscopy Procedures
  • 7 Robotic Joint Replacement Procedures using the MAKO System
  • 11 Additional Orthopaedic Procedures
  • Numerous Clinical Case Discussions, Surgical Planning Sessions, and Imaging Reviews

The operative exposure covered a wide spectrum of shoulder pathology and treatment strategies. Particular emphasis was placed on surgical planning, patient positioning, portal placement, arthroscopic techniques, implant selection, soft tissue management, and postoperative rehabilitation protocols. The fellowship also provided insights into multidisciplinary patient care pathways and efficient theatre workflow within the NHS system.

Apart from the technical aspects of surgery, I gained valuable lessons in clinical judgment, patient communication, decision-making, and evidence-based management of shoulder disorders. These experiences will undoubtedly contribute to improving my own clinical practice and patient care.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to ISKSAA for providing this prestigious travelling fellowship opportunity. I am especially thankful to Mr. Kapil Kumar for his warm hospitality, mentorship, and willingness to share his extensive knowledge and experience throughout my stay. I also extend my appreciation to the entire team at Woodend Hospital for their support and cooperation.

This fellowship has been an immensely rewarding experience, and I am confident that the knowledge and skills gained will have a lasting impact on my professional development.

Yours sincerely,
Dr. Hargovind Singh
