ISKSAA MOHALI FORTIS TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIPS
Respected sir,
At the outset, I would like to thank all the ISKSAA committee members for allowing me to be a fellow
under DR. Manit Arora for 2 weeks. The two weeks were filled with knowledge, brainstorming and
interactive one-to-one sessions regarding recent sports medicine and arthroscopy updates.
My fellowship period as per the discussion with my fellowship coordinator dr manit, was from 14th of
January to 28th of January 2023
My first day was a pleasant surprise to see the volume of sports injuries being treated at this centre.
I was welcomed by Dr Manits’ team and was given a brief tour of the operation theatre and wards. On the
very first day, I was introduced to the operation theatre. I witnessed 7 cases of ACL
reconstruction/repair and one case of rotator cuff tear being operated on day 1, finishing by 8 pm. The
day was filled with witnessing lots of new techniques and concepts being applied. There was much
question-and-answer between my mentor, me, and the team.
The same routine of surgeries and interesting questions and doubts were discussed in all 14 days of
stay. All the discussion was surrounded by evidence-based medicine. Every Tuesday, Wednesday and
Saturday were full-fledged OTs. Each week was a mix of knees and shoulder with a different diagnosis.
Mondays and Fridays were reserved for OPDs. I witnessed how the patients are handled right from
registration to counselling, planning for surgery, to post op follow up protocol. To accommodate the
heavy volume of patients Dr. manit scheduled two to three cases on Mondays and Fridays sometimes. The
fellowship covered vast areas of sports surgery and shoulder surgeries. These included
- ACL repair
- ACL reconstruction
- Meniscal repair/meniscal balancing
- PCL reconstruction
- MCL repair and internal bracing
- PLC reconstruction
- Revision ACL with ALL reconstruction
- Bankart with hill-sach lesion
- Revision bankart surgery
- Latarjet surgery with ICBG
- Rotator cuff repair
- Reverse shoulder arthroplasty for RC arthropathy
The ward rounds included monitoring physiotherapy protocol, visits and counselling regarding the outcomes
and expectations. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to write 2 research papers with his team.
Working under his mentorship was a boon to me. I witnessed an array of different techniques used in
surgery and ways to handle complications. All in all, it was a complete package for a fortnight. I
benefitted hugely and feel indebted to him for all the help he offered during my stint as a fellow. I
have witnessed about 50 cases in two weeks which is unbelievable.
I would recommend anyone who is fond of learning arthroscopy and sports medicine to do a fellowship
under him for all-round development in sports medicine. I was treated humbly and with all the warmth
from the co-fellows and junior attendees. The staff was great and supportive in all steps of my two
weeks.
I wholeheartedly thank ISKSAA for giving me an opportunity to visit Dr. Manit for the fellowship. I hope
to continue my bond with ISKSAA with same enthusiasm. Wishing ISKSAA the best.
Thank you ,
Yours truly,
Pratik M Rathod
