ISKSAA ABERDEEN TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIPS 2025
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Professor Lalit Maini and Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj for giving me an opportunity to interact with the experts of Shoulder Surgery and observe the working culture of Scotland. I was awarded the ISKSAA travelling Aberdeen fellowship for 2 weeks.
During my visit, I attended Albyn and Woodend Hospital. Woodend Hospital is a tertiary care hospital of NHS GRAMPIAN since 1948. Mainly elective Orthopaedic surgeries and Mobility and Rehabilitation Services (MARS) are provided here. I arrived in Aberdeen on 18th May evening, after checking into the hotel, I called up Dr Kapil Kumar for further details. Sir explained everything to me for the next morning. On the 19th, I reached Albyn Hospital and attended the OPD with Dr Kumar. To my surprise, all the patients are pleased with the treatment. During my OPDs, I saw a wide variety of shoulder patients, like cuff tear, instability, arthritic shoulder and various other problems related to the shoulder. The next day, I attended the operation theatre at Woodend Hospital. In every OT, there was 5 to 6 cases of the shoulder. Cases include rotator cuff repair, anatomical and reverse shoulder replacement, subacromial decompression, biceps tenodesis, subscapularis repair, carpal tunnel decompression, trigger finger release, and biceps repair. I was fortunate to attend two OPD, two OT, and one day for case discussion every week. On the case discussion day, we discussed almost 20-25 cases, which are varied and complex cases in which all four senior shoulder consultants, with a radiologist and physiotherapist, participated. During my visit, I was fortunate enough to see Robotic hip and knee replacement and a few cases of knee Arthroscopy. I attended the Physiotherapy department and learned the protocol for various shoulder diseases. During this, Miss Claire explained the concepts behind these protocols. This fellowship is extremely helpful and concept-changing to me. During this, I witnessed that 80-85-year-old patients have full shoulder range of motion and function after shoulder replacement surgery.
Dr Kapil Kumar is a fantastic surgeon, a great teacher and a wonderful human being. He explained every question that I asked. During surgery, he explained everything step by step. He helped me at every step during my visit. He hosted dinner at the Aberdeen seaside, it which we enjoyed a lot. It was a memorable and nostalgic experience. I thank Dr Kapil Kumar, Dr David Cairns, Dr Scott Barker, Dr Kash Khan, Dr David Neilly and Miss Claire from the physiotherapy department. During this fellowship, I was fortunate enough to visit Edinburgh and London, which was a memorable experience
My sincerest thanks to Dr. Kapil Kumar for all the painstaking effort he took to make my fellowship fruitful and truly memorable.
