ISKSAA SPORTS MED FELLOWSHIP
I thank Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj and Dr. Lalit Maini for giving me the fellowship at Sportsmed SA Adelaide with Dr. Nick Wallwork. Dr. Wallwork is a young, dynamic upper limb surgeon with a good experience in arthroscopy of shoulder, elbow and wrist, besides being a great person.
I attended this fellowship from 14th of February to 28th of February. My two weeks with Dr. Wallwork at Sportsmed were great. I observed a number of upper limb surgeries particularly shoulder arthroscopies (SAD, Rotator cuff repair, Bankart repair) and a number of other upper limb procedures, including reverse shoulder arthroplasty. Dr. Wallwork and his all theatre staff at sportsmed were very cooperative and helping. I also attended OPD with Dr. Wallwork where he used to clinically examine and evaluate the patients for surgeries.
My accommodation was in nearby Majestic old lion apartments which were great and personally arranged and paid by Dr. Wallwork. Lunch at the hospital was free and Dr. Wallwork personally drove me to and from hospital. I also had an opportuinity to have a dinner with Dr. Wallwork and his family which was very generous of them. I thank Dr. Wallwork and his family for this.
I also had an opportuinity to watch the world cup cricket match between Pakistan and india which was a great experience in itself.
The only drawback for me and future fellows is that you have to arrange and spend for travel etc. yourself, to observe but not assist any surgery, which in my case was too high because of high profile cricket match during same time and people from india were travelling to Adelaide a lot(approx. Rs 1,25,000 one lakh twenty five thousandfor air travel, taxi to and from airport, taxi to and from hospital (occasionally), dinner and breakfasts.).So to spend this much to just observe is a tough call.
