My sincere and heartfelt thanks to ISKSAA President Dr.Pushpinder Bajaj and Chairman Prof. Lalit Maini for selecting me and giving me the opportunity to attend this 2 weeks SPORTSMED , Adelaide fellowship programme. Special thanks to our local gaurdian, teacher and fellowship guide Dr Nichollas Wallwork who made us succesfully complete the programme.
I reached Adelaide on 13th March, 2017 to meet this wonderfull guy Dr Aditya Bharadwaj, my co fellow from Amritsar at Majestic Lion Apartment, Jerningham Road. It was a beautiful/ luxury 2 bedroom service apartment sponsored by Dr Nichollas wallwork.
We were lucky to meet our guide Dr Nichollas wallwork on the next day morning, who personally came to pick us up from the hotel and drove us to SPORTSMED SA Stepney clinic and Orthopedic Hospital. He took us around hospital and introduced us to consultant doctors and other hospital staff, who were very friendly and happy to see us.
Our programme started from March 14th and ended on March 28th, 2017. Dr Nichollas Wallwork is young and dynamic upperlimb surgeon with whom we used to attend OPD clinic and Operation Theatre every alternate days.
In the clinic, we were lucky to see Dr Nick peronally examining and discuss various upperlimb cases like Rotator cuff tears, Impingement shoulder, Periarthritis and GH arthritis, Shoulder Instability, Upper limb trauma, CTS, small joint OA. We had discussion on selection of pateints for surgery, type of surgery and the post operative protocol in his clinics. Dr Nick also introduced us to the Physiotherapist in the hospital with whom we discussed post op physio protocol of shoulder in particular. Once in a week we were taken to south Sportsmed clinic at Morphet vale in the outskerts of Adelaide. It used be a smaller clinic with OPD and Physiotherapy.
In Operation Theater visit, Dr Nick introduced us to surgeons of other specilities of orthopedics like Joint replacement, Lower limb surgery, pediatric, Foot and ankle. Most of the time we used to observe surgeries performed by Dr Nick. We came across spectrum of shoulder surgeries like Arthroscopic Cuff repair, Bankart repair, Subacromial decompression, Capsular release for Periarthritis, Total shoulder Arthroplasty and other rare upper limb surgeries like DIP fusion, Interposition arthroplasty of 1st CMC joint, corrective osteotomy of Metacarpals, distal Biceps avusion repair, Biceps sub pectoral tenodesis etc. During our free time we used to observe and discuss surgeries performed by consultants of other speciality, the rare ones are Robotic Uni comp TKR, Patient specific TKR (VISIONAIRE), OCD knee debridement and fixation, Arthoscopic ACLR with different types of techniques, RPF TKR etc.
Dr Nick used to sponsor us lunch every day and also invited us for dinner with his family at his home. He also gave us few souvenier to carry memories of SPORTSMED hospital. There were plenty of beautiful community tennis courts in adelaide and we also had the oppurtinity to play tennis with Dr Nick and his kids.
Dr Nick also got us tickets to view a football match at Adelaide oval on a Sunday afternoon. Adelaide was a quite and calm place with lot of beautifull landscape in and around the city. During week ends we had good time going around adelaide and visited interesting places like Barossa Valley, Glenelg and Henley beach, Zoo, Cleland conservation park, Adelaide Fringe (annual festival) etc.
Overall it was once a lifetime experience to be in Sportsmed, Adelaide and My heartfelt thanks to Dr Nick for his unforgettable favour and making our visit memorable.
Since it was my first visit to Australia, I took this oppurtunity to visit and explore some beautifull places in Melbourne and Sydney for a week, before I landed back to India.
