ISKSAA LANCASHIRE UK TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP 2024
I am writing this testimonial to express my heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the East Lancashire Fellowship from October 14th to November 4th, 2023, at the Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General Hospital in the UK. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Dr. P. S. Bajaj & Dr. Lalit Maini for facilitating this invaluable experience. Special appreciation goes to my mentor, Mr. Makaram Srinivasan, whose guidance and expertise greatly enriched my fellowship.
Upon my arrival at Manchester Airport on October 13, I traveled to Blackburn, where I stayed for the duration of the fellowship. I found accommodation conveniently located just near the station, which allowed me easy access to the blackburn hospital via bus which took just 10 mins, and also to the central market place and to local amenities.
The fellowship has Trauma exposure at Royal Blackburn Hospital and Elective exposure at the Burnley General Hospital, and there is a convinient shuttle between the two hospitals that take just 25 minutes. Under Mr. Srinivasan's mentorship, I had the unique opportunity to scrub in and assist in upper limb arthroscopy and arthroplasty (TSA & rSA) cases.
I was able to gain comprehensive exposure to both trauma and elective surgeries. The consultants were not only skilled surgeons but also enthusiastic educators, eager to share their knowledge and insights. I learned invaluable techniques in knee arthroplasty (both UKR & TKR) and arthroscopic surgery from Dr Cullen, Dr Kamath and Dr Shah, many of whom let us scrub in the cases with them.
Outside of the operating rooms, I was fortunate to explore the beautiful landscapes around, including a visit to the Lake District and Yorkshire with a car i rented. I managed to watch a premier league match of Manchester City as well, which was really remarkable. My trip to UK concluded with a memorable trip to London.
This fellowship has profoundly impacted my professional outlook, providing me with new insights and approaches to managing arthroplasty and arthroscopy cases. I wholeheartedly recommend this fellowship to aspiring surgeons looking to refine their skills and gain a global perspective in orthopaedic practice.
Thank you once again to the entire ISKSAA team and all my mentors for making this an unforgettable experience.
Sincerely,
Dr. Adil Karim
