ISKSAA DELHI TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP: 2015 – 16
I Dr. Darsh Goyal and my colleague Dr Sambit Kumar Panda had a very good experience regarding our ISKSAA Midland fellowship. With all humbleness I express my thanks to Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj & Dr. Lalit Maini for giving us the opportunity of this fellowship. This position has allowed us to gain valuable experience working in an academic reference environment by assisting highly qualified surgeons. This started from the interview itself where we all were offered a very friendly environment byDr Ved Goswami. He asked our expectations regarding the fellowship and also at the same time made everything clear regarding his work schedule & the type of help we could get from this fellowship. We did clarify our doubts and enquiried everything regarding the fellowship, kind of accommodation, weather and work culture at his workplace. Really that was a great interaction as everybody felt good following that interview. Of course I and Dr Darsh were announced to have that at the end of ISKSAA -2014.
I reached the guest house of Maulana Azad Medical College a day before the start of our fellowship where I firstly met my other two fellows Dr. Achin and Dr. Amlan, here we received a warm welcome message by Dr. Lalit Maini . Both my fellows have been very nice and supportive throughout the fellowship. We all stayed in the guest house together and relished each others company everyday.
We started our fellowship with the shoulder course at Indian Spinal injury centre where the case discussion and the workshop was very interesting and informative. We again visited the Indian Spinal Injury centre two days before completion of our fellowship and met Dr.Deepak Raina and Dr.Bhushan and saw cases of THR, TKR and a case of acetabular fracture.
Our next day visit was at Sports injury centre, here we had cases of Arthroscopic ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff tear and Bankart repair done by Dr.Deepak Choudhary and Dr.Deepak Joshi. During our fellowship we observed and assisted almost all variety of ACL reconstructions mentioned in the literature along with the art of completing the procedure faster than the usual pace without compromising the quality of the surgery.
Our next day visit was scheduled at AIIMS with Dr.C.S.Yadav where we saw bilateral THR and TKR and a case of high tibial osteotomy. Some of his techniques were very unique and interesting.
Next day, our visit was planned for Sir Gangaram Hospital. We received a very warm welcome by Dr.Prateek K.Gupta and I was overwhelmed with his great hospitality. He showed us Bankart repair, ACL reconstruction and Tendoachilles repair. We again got the opportunity to visit Sir Gangaram Hospital under the guidance of Dr.V.B.Bhasin. He is a very innovative surgeon, he has also developed few of his own instruments for shoulder surgeries. He has a very unique technique of doing ACL reconstruction. Here we saw a case of Latarjet procedure for recurrent shoulder dislocation and a case of Arthroscopically releasing the adhesions in knee stiffness .Third time we visited this hospital for the knee course arranged by ISKSAA where we got to learn the paediatric ACL reconstruction through a well arranged workshop and surgical videos. It was a great learning session. The best surgery during the fellowship tenure was revision ACL reconstruction shown live at the knee course by Dr.Deepak Choudhary and Dr.Deepak Joshi. It has been very kind of professor Lalit Maini and the ISKSAA team for including a knee and a shoulder course in the fellowship schedule which helped in enhancement of our skills and understanding.
On the next day we headed to Apollo Hospital under the guidance of Dr. Raju Vaishya and Dr.Y. Kharbanda. Dr. Kharbanda detailed us with the basics of Arthoplasty, pre operative planning and showed cases of TKR.
Next day we had a visit at Fortis Hospital Vasant Kunj. It was very nice of Dr. Gurinder Bedi for arranging a case discussion via power point presentation for better understanding of the case followed by a case of bilateral TKR and Open AC joint reconstruction. We also got to visit Fortis hospital on another day under Dr. Dhananjay Gupta and we had a case of bilateral TKR.
Next day we went to Artemis hospital and met Dr.I.P.S Oberoi. He is very polite , humble and a very gentle person. He explained the steps in difficult cases of Arthroplasty .We saw a case of Arthroscopic ACL reconstruction, menisectomy and a rare case of ochronosis planned for THR. We also got the opportunity to visit his OPD and see some of his patients and his follow ups.
Next day we went to Sant Parmanand Hospital And met Dr. Shekhar Agrawal & Dr. Shekhar Srivastava .Dr Shekhar Agrawal showed us B/L TKR and TKR in Rheumatoid knee. He is very quick in his surgeries and we got to learn a lot from him.
On the last day of fellowship we went to Safdarjung Hospital where we started our day with shoulder Arthroscopic Bankart repair followed by a case of open rotator cuff and then Arthroscopic subacromial decompression. On our way back from the hospital, we met Dr.Pushpinder Bajaj at his clinic. It was very kind of him to give us time from his busy schedule. He gave us the opportunity to practice Arthroscopy on dry knee model. We also visited the rehabilitation facility of his clinic. It was a great pleasure meeting him. He motivated us to be an active participant in ISKSAA and shared his vision for ISKSAA.
My sincere thanks to Professor Lalit Maini for arranging our stay and personally taking care of our travel. On daily basis Professor Lalit Maini used to detail us with the next day programme and finalize the schedule. He interacted with us regarding his vision for ISKSAA and was always there to help us in all regards. As a result of the goodwill earned by Professor Lalit Maini and Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj we were treated as guests in all the hospitals of repute in Delhi. All of the eminent surgeons were ready to teach us and were generous enough to resolve all our queries. All the surgeons wholeheartedly shared their techniques and detailed us every step of the procedures shown and cleared all our doubts. The best part of this fellowship is that within a very short period of time we got to learn from various surgeons with different expertise which differentiates Delhi travelling fellowship from others .
I thank the ISKSAA team for providing me this opportunity to build myself in the field of Arthroplasty and Arthroscopy. This fellowship has boosted by confidence in my field of interest and I look forward to be an active participant of ISKSAA as a student , as a member and as a fellow delegate for continuous learning. My special thanks to Professor Lalit Maini and Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj for giving me this opportunity and being there for us always.
