ISKSAA Delhi Fellowship 2014

Duration – 3 months ( 01.12.2014 – 07.03.2015 )

First of all I would like to thank Dr P.S. Bajaj for giving me the golden opportunity to work with him. After working as a Registrar in Orthopaedics for quite sometime, I realised that I needed something more, a better guidance , a fellowship to strengthen and improve my skills. ISKSAA brought me the opportunity.

The email for selection in the ISKSAA - Delhi Fellowship under Dr PS Bajaj however came all of a sudden and I grabbed it. My wife and parents took all the pains and supported me in my new venture. So one fine Saturday morning in November , I landed up in Dr Bajaj’s clinic in Safdarjung Enclave and thus begun my journey.

The journey was however not a cake walk. A Bengali from the east exposed to the north Indian culture - a cultural shock in the beginning. But the supportive and kind attitude of my boss made things gradually easy. Immediately after I reached Delhi I was in a desperate search for a good cheap house which was not so easy to find in the capital city. However, Dr Bajaj had already kept all set for me.

My day usually begun at 5am in the morning since Dr Bajaj always operated early. Getting up in the chilling winter of Delhi was a nightmare. It usually remained dark when I would set off for the hospital. The dogs still sleeping. But, once started things would roll on its own. My daily routine involved preparing the patients for the surgery and making sure that all were set before boss arrived. Once the surgery started time would just fly off. Then the routine ward rounds, discharges and the clinics.

I learnt a lot during those 3 months from Dr Bajaj. From patient interaction to the minor tit bits of surgery. Above all it was the awesome skill of Dr Bajaj that impressed me the most. His arthroscopic ACL reconstruction with Intrafixation system was the best part of the show. I haven’t seen many surgeons doing such a solid surgery. During my tenure I saw numerous arthroscopies and arthroplasties of knee along with many shoulder and hip surgeries. Often trauma cases would also drop in. So I got a variety of exposure. Often I would also get hands on experience during the period. Besides surgery and clinics I was also given 2 to 3 research articles during my tenure. Prof (Dr) Lalit Maini helped me a lot with the research articles. Two of them already submitted. Attending conferences and workshops in and around Delhi was also a part of my training.

Three months is a very short period and I wished I could continue for some more time under Dr Bajaj. But, there were other commitments already pending. Dr Bajaj is not only a highly skilled surgeon, but also a wonderful human being. An extremely supportive friendly gentleman, always ready to help. However, I must also mention Dr Bajaj’s parents and his wife (all doctors) who always extended their helping hands whenever I needed them . I am also grateful to the support staff in his clinic who helped me in day to day matters, from finding a rent to transport. I must once again thank Dr Bajaj for his guidance and help.It was a wonderful experience with him during my fellowship. I wish I could develop his god gifted surgical skills one day.

Thanking you,

Dr Arindam Mukherjee
