ISKSAA – BESS FELLOWSHIP 2019 (Liverpool, UK)
18th June to 5th July 2019
As a young surgeon its everyone's wish to go for fellowships which open doors of vast surgical
exposure to them. For this desire of young surgeons ISKSAA is doing great work by giving chance for
such fellowships to many budding surgeons like me. I am highly thankful to Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj,
president ISKSAA and entire ISKSAA team for selecting me for this fellowship in Liverpool.
It was a very well-organized fellowship program for three weeks. I am highly thankful to Mr. Rish
Parmar, consultant Upper Limb Liverpool who was my mentor at Liverpool and organizer of this
fellowship. I am grateful to Mr. Peter Brownson President BESS who gave me opportunity to get
attached to his Upper limb Unit at Liverpool.
Fellowship started with my visit to a small but beautiful town of Harrogate near Leeds on 17th June
which included BESS instructional course and 31st BESS annual scientific meeting. It was a great
academic feast. I got chance to meet many upper limb surgeons from all over United Kingdom over
those four days. One of the senior upper limb surgeons of Indian origin, Dr. Anand Mishra invited me
to visit his place at Lake District over weekend which was an amazing place.
From there I went to Liverpool and got accommodation at Broadgreen Hospital which was a
comfortable single room very close to Hospital. On 24th June my fellowship started at The Royal
Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust. Mr. Parmar made sure that I was
comfortable all the time. He was always ready to answer any queries and was a great teacher told
many tips and tricks in all cases. I got chance to observe variety of upper limb surgeries that included
shoulder Arthroplasty (computer Navigated), Bankart repair, Laterjet, cuff repair, elbow and
shoulder trauma and other arthroscopic upper limb surgeries. I was continuously guided by upper
limb fellows Mr. Dimitrios and Mr. Simonds who were very cooperative and helped me in every
possible way. I also got chance to observe their clinics on few days which has wide variety of upper
limb patients to examine. I also got opportunity to observe lower limb surgeries on days where there
were no upper limb surgeries. I also attended their journal club which was again a good experience.
During weekends I got chance to see Liverpool city as well as a day trip to Wales. It was over all a
very good fellowship that one should go for.
