ISKSAA NEW ZEALAND 2 WEEKS TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIPS
My sincere thanks to Dr.Pushpinder Bajaj, Dr. Nicholas Wallwork, Dr Khalid Mohammed and Dr. Alex Malone for giving me as first Indonesian member of ISKSAA suchwonderful lifetime fellowship opportunity for very short time at Christ Church, South Island, New Zealand on May 2017.
Everyone know New Zealand very well, a hobbit country, beautiful paradise island which near to arctic that surrounded with healthy and fresh air environment. I bet this scenery will never elsewhere to find.
My fellowship is commenced at Chirst Church City, South Island of New Zealand. This city is rebuild after devastating earth quake on 2011. The central public hospital is ChCh Hospital in the center of the city and the other is Burwood Hospital with distance around 10 km. I was expose with many Shoulder cases.
I reach ChCh airport on May 2017 at evening, and I was welcomed with very cold weather as it is contrary when I leave Indonesia is hot season. I go directly to diplomat motel at papanui road merivale by orange metro bus. By the way it is easy to find metro card or we can pay cash to bus driver. The other options we can go by taxi but for me bus is more economical.
Day 1. I meet Dr Khalid Mohammed at 09.00 in Southern Cross Clinics. He was very kind and good surgeon.Heintroduce me to her staffs Sarah and Jo. His clinics is so clean, nice and well managed and the view is fantastic. Dr Khalid usually have appointment for outpatient in this clinics. Southern cross is private clinics and hospital. After see some patient Dr Khalid proceed to have 4 cases surgery in Southern Cross hospital that located next to the clinics. About 5 minutes walk from the clinics. Then we visit the theatre at SC hospital and I observed Dr Khalid surgery. He taught me a lot practical set up and techniques he used to do for the surgery. He also introduce me to her joyful and smart assistant Jill. We have 4 cases arthroscopy surgery include labral repair, SLAP repair, Rotator Cuff repair and one case mini open Rotator cuff repair. After surgery we have a nice coffee break and lunch inside the hospital.
Day 2 visit to St. Georges Hospital theatre after Dr Khalid visit his patient and pick me up at Southern Cross hospital. This day we have 4 cases surgery. 3 cases for shoulders and 1 case for knee. Dr Khalid show me a lot of his techniqueand have a discussion also during the surgery or when we visit the patient. Today I observe meniscectomy arthroscopy and frozen shoulder MUGA release and impingement case having a debridement and sub acromial decompression .The last case is my first time to see shoulder arthroplasty anatomical with SMR modular type implant. Dr Khalid is a skilful and generous to show me the detail of procedure.
Day 3 Wednesday is the day for morning conference meeting at ChCh public hospital. The meeting usually start at 08.00.Dr Khalid invite me to go to this meeting. Resident is present the case and many consultants are giving enlightenment for the cases. After the meeting Dr Khalid arrange me to meet his Colleague Dr Alex Malone at Forte HospitalDr Malone is generous and good shoulder surgeon. Then I accompanied Dr Alex Malone and visit theatre and we have 5 cases surgery for today..Dr Malone also teach me about his technique and set up for his routine surgery. The cases are rotator cuff repair and decompression mostly he is using the beach chair and spider arm positioner technique. One case of open massive rotator cuff repair. After surgery I have a coffee break and some lunch with him.
Day 4 I visit the Southern Cross hospital with Dr Khalid and we have 3 cases surgery for this day. One shoulder and 2 cases elbow procedure. I observe for debridement and release of lateral epicondylitis elbow and removal loose bodies per arthroscopy. After thati have whole day time to go to Burwood public hospital to meet Dr Malone. Better to go there by metro bus. Burwood hospital is clean and large public hospital. We have a clinics appointment and see outpatient clinics. Dr Malone giveuschance fordiscussion for today cases with resident and registrar. Since it also teaching hospital I met also resident and registrar.
Day 5 visit the Southern Cross Clinics to meet Dr Khalid. No cases for surgery today and I can observe whole day Dr Khalid at Clinics to see many patients with shoulder problems. I observe history taking and examination for instability cases and rotator cuff cases, also chronic biceps ruptures and AC joint problems.
Day 6 it is a free time. I use it to explore South Island New Zealand. We can sights seeing to see earth quake trace or go to museum by metro bus. Shopping, see mountains and find best culinary at town. Don’t forget to bring cold apparel and boot. Hagley park is the best evening to do for jogging.
Day 7 Dr Khalid invite me to go to Sunday Clinics meeting with rehab. This meeting is routinely held. Inspired by Dr Khalid himself to have a good understanding between surgeon and rehab physiotherapist about the surgery and rehab. Dr Angela is his team for this meeting and she was very inspiring. The meeting was attended mostly physiotherapist. It was a great meeting tough.
Day 8 visit Burwood public Hospital and meet Dr Khalid and Malone. They’re having same day surgery so I will be very happy to observe them in one place. There are 6 cases surgery. One case for shoulder replacement resurfacing great job done by Dr Malone and arthroscopy for rotator cuff repair and bankart and hill sach repair. 2 cases of arthroplasty of the knee and UKA cases beautifully done by Dr Khalid.
Day 9 going to Burwood Hospital to have morning clinics with Dr Khalid. After that we go to theatre and have 1 case surgery. The case is revision shoulder arthroplasty because of loosening and pain. Metalosys linear fracture L1. It was a good case and good SMR implant to have a revision.
Day 10 Meet Dr Khalid and go to ChCh meeting room to have Wednesday meetings. After that we got o Burwood Hospital for outpatient clinics. After go to clinics I observe Dr Khalid one case surgery at Burwood for TKR reconstruction OA after HTO. In the afternoon I was invited dinner with Dr Khalid and family to visit his house that actually very near with my motel. It’s a beautiful house. We spent night time together to watch Rugby with “ALL BLACK” team as his favourite team. Anyway rugby is not a very popular game in my country…but it was a great game to watch tough…..and thanks for dinner ..delicious Pizza and warmth welcomed ..thank you.
Day 11 visit to Southern Cross Hospital theatre to observe 2 cases surgery. Open release lateral epicondylitis elbow and open excision distal end clavicle and AC joint weaver dunn reconstruction. After the surgery done I continue to go to chirst church hospital to observe Dr Malone for periprosthetic humeral fracture post shoulder arthroplasty reconstruction.
Day 12 at 08.20 I walk to Caledonian road to meet Dr Khalid at Southern Cross Clinics to say goodbye and thank you before he went to China for ISAKOS meeting.it was great time with him.. After that I visit Burwood hospital to meet Dr Malone at theatre and observe 5 cases of surgery. 3 cases for THR and ORIF clavicle and Nailing Humerus fracture that beautifully doneby Dr Malone. We have discussion and coffee break and lunch following the surgery. I say goodbye to him also…thank you for everything.
Next day I went back to Indonesia transit from Singapore and Brisbane and bring all happy memories from New Zealand with me and not forget to bring some souvenirs also from. It was a great experience for me.
Once again I thank you ISKSAA Dr Pushpinder and Dr Khalid also Dr Malone for their best and well organized of my fellowship, and also their staff Jo,Sarah and Jill. Till we meet again..
I am very sure this fellowships will give me benefit for my best practice for my patient.
