ISKSAA BESS TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP 2019
It was a great experience to be a part of ISKSAA. I am indebted to Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj (president) and
Dr. Lalit Maini (chairman) of ISKSAA, who gave me the platform to learn from the surgeons at Royal
Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospital.
I would like to thank the executives of ISKSAA and BESS president Mr P. Brownson for granting me ISKSAA
BESS travelling fellowship 2019.
My fellowship duration was of two weeks, starting from 19th August 2019. My fellowship at Liverpool
consisted of visiting at the Royal Liverpool Hospital and Broadgreen Hospital, Upper limb unit.
Mr P.Brownson, Mr Rish Parmar, Mr Smith, Mr Guisasola and Mr Kent were my mentors during the fellowship
program.
Mr Parmar is a very helpful and kind person. Before my visit to Liverpool, he helped me with
accommodations, and helped me booking the hostel in advance. On visiting Royal Liverpool Hospital, he
introduced me to the upper limb team. He helped me in preparing a roster, so that I could gain maximum
from my visit.
My visits included attending OR at Royal Liverpool Hospital and at Royal Broadgreen Hospital. On a few
days, I also attended the OPD with the upper limb team.
My day used to start at 8 am with case discussions. After that, I went to OR at either Royal Liverpool
Hospital or Royal Broadgreen Hospital. I got to observe a lot of surgeries including arthroscopic
rotator cuff repair, arthroscopic Bankart repair, acromioclavicular dislocation, total shoulder
arthroplasty etc. Before the surgery, the fellows and consultants briefed me the case and we used to
discuss the management options and the salient points about surgery. All the consultants were very keen
on teaching and helped me maximize my visit.
At weekends, I also visited the historic city of Liverpool. I visited the Georgian Quarter, Pier head,
Prince’s dock, Merseyside maritime museum, Royal Albert dock and Museum of Liverpool. Liverpool indeed
has a very rich and vast history.
In the end I would again like to thank Dr Pushpinder Bajaj, Dr Lalit Maini and Mr P Brownson to give me
this opportunity of learning. I would also like to thank Mr Rish Parmar and all the other consultants
and fellows of Upper limb unit of Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen hospitals who taught me nuances and
details related to upper limb surgeries.
