ISKSAA ABERDEEN 2019 FELLOWSHIP.
TESTIMONIAL
My sincere gratitude to Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj, Dr. Lalit Maini, Dr. Kapil Kumar and team ISKSAA for
giving me opportunity to attend two weeks Fellowship in Woodend Hospital Aberdeen, Scotland.
I got selection for this fellowship in ISKSAA Global Summit 2018 held in Leeds, UK. I was privileged
to have Dr. Kapil Kumar as my mentor.
Dr. Kapil Kumar is a kind hearted, open minded person and was very helpful, accessible and guided
me from beginning to end.
The weather was on the cooler side, but most of the days were sunny and could enjoy occasional
freezing drizzles.
Woodend hospital is a tertiary care hospital of NHS GRAMPIAN since 1948. Mainly elective
Orthopedic surgeries and Mobility and Rehabilitation Services (MARS) are provided here.
On the first day Dr. Kapil Kumar introduced me to his colleagues and surgical team.
There are six OT’s dedicated to Orthopedic surgery.
It was indeed a splendid experience to be with dedicated and well experienced Surgeons in
sophisticated and well advanced Operation theater.
Day 1
Day 1 Started with a rare case of Pectoralis major tendon rupture repair done by Dr. Kapil Kumar.
Arthroscopic capsular release Shoulder for Periarthritis shoulder done by Dr. Kapil Kumar. He is
very brisk and skillful in shoulder Arthroscopy and always ready to explain.
Afternoon attended a knee replacement headed by Mr. Ashcroft who is a senior Arthroplasty
Surgeon.
Later attended Hip replacement in a neck of femur fracture patient with ipsilateral IMIL femoral
nail insitu by Mr. Ashcroft. Mr. Ashcroft used to explain step by step what he is doing.
Day 2
Day 2 was in Arthroplasty OT.
First attended THR by Ms. Louis who is a energetic and dedicated Surgeon.
Next was TKR and THR headed by Mr. Ashcroft.
Last case was THR by Mr. Khan. Mr. Khan used to do hip replacement sitting in a chair, patient
supine on table through Harding’s approach.
Day 3
It was a different experience to be in the OPD with Dr. Kapil Kumar in the morning.
Patients from 300 miles faraway came for consultation.
His way of clinical examination of the shoulder was unique, simple and analysised all muscles
and functions of joint.
I was priveleged to spend afternoon hours with Mr. Dougall and Mr. Khan in OT.
Two primary TKR and two THR were done in two operation theaters.
Day 4
Mr. Dougall is a humble skillful arthroplasty Surgeon, he detailed me step by step the TKR and
THR while he performed it.
The unique way of doing bilateral unicompartment TKR by Mr. Dougall in medial compartment
OA knee was a new experience.
Later attended TKR done by Mr. Mathew.
Day 5 & 6
As the weekends came along I visited nearby tourist destinations, gardens, and had a Highland
tour.
Dunnottar castle, river Dee and Beach Boulevardare worth visit.
Day 7
Monday morning back at the Busy OT I could watch 3 TKRS by Mr. Mathew and 2
THR done Mr. S Khan.
Watching different hands i could imbibe different approaches and stratergies.
Day 8
Approaches to minor cases like Trigger finger release, Tennis elbow release by Dr. Kapil Kumar
was a class apart
Two TKR by Mr. Smith and Two THR by Mr. Mitchell in different OT's.
were also a fantastic experience.
Day 9
Reverse shoulder arthroplasty by Dr. Kapil Kumar was altogether a new experience
Two knee arthroplasty surgeries by Mr. Smith on the same day was inspiring
Day 10
Day 10 was enlightening with the following cases
Hinged TKR by Mr. Smith Matt.
Primary Knee replacement by Mr. Mathew.
THR by Mr. Martin.
Darrach's procedure done by Mr. Dougall.
Day 11
Last day I was with Mr. Robert Sam, Ankle and foot Surgeon performed ankle Arthroscopic
debridement and detailed about the outcomes. He demonstrated tips and tricks of a Ankle
Arthroscopy.
The technique of First metatarsophalengeal fusion in first metatarsophalengeal arthritis by Mr.
Robert Sam was noteworthy.
Last cases of the day was hip arthroplasty in severe OA hip of two patients by Mr. Martin.
Mr. Kapil Kumar's fellowship dinner in his house for Indian fellows was a memorable and nostalgic
experience. Mr. Kapil and family were very welcoming and the flavours from our homeland was
a grand finale.
This report will be incomplete with out mentioning the paramedical and nursing staffs in OT who
were very kindhearted and considerate to me throughout the fellowship program.
The fellowship as a whole was a boost to my career as a Orthopedic surgeon. This fellowship not
only redefined my knowledge and skill in arthroplasty and arthroscopy surgical techniques but
also in improving clinical examination skill, pre-op evaluation & planning and patient care.
My special heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj and ISKAA Team.
In closing, my sincerest thanks to Dr. Kapil Kumar for all the painstaking effort he took to make
my fellowship fruitful and truly memorable.
