EAST LANCASHIRE HOSPITAL FELLOWSHIP, 2018
ISKSAA Fellowship Completion Report: Dr ZafarIsrail
I would like to thank ISKSAA, Dr Bajaj and Dr Maini for selecting me for East Lancashire Fellowship in 2017. I would also like to acknowledge my mentor MrMakaramSrinivasan and his colleague Mr Rajesh Sarin(consultants in NHS are addressed as Mr and registrars are prefixed with Dr) for their guidance and support during the observership. My fellowship colleague, Dr Manish Sethi, turned out to be a friend, philosopher and a great chef in making.
I, landed up in Heathrow and travelled by train to Preston and then to Burnley on a Sunday afternoon. The weather and landscape of quintessential England countryside was amazing and I still miss the picturesque town of Burnley. My home for the coming month was a flat in Bennet-John’s Accomodation for which I paid 310 pounds. It overlooked the main street and was easily connected by Bus to all parts of the town.
My fellowship began with a drive with Dr Makaram Srinivasan, who had come to pick me up in the morning and took me to Trauma Meet at the Royal Blackburn Hospital. Thereafter, we attended theatres of predominantly trauma cases at the hospital. Burnley General Hospital, takes care of elective surgeries and we use to alternate between them, looking for interesting cases and surgeries.
Mr Srinivasan is a very modest human and a generous colleague, who taught us perfection in trauma cases. His skill in shoulder arthroscopy is admirable and he made reverse shoulder surgery look like a cakewalk. He is also the designer surgeon for a bipolar Radial head replacement, which was a new insight for us. He is a wonderful person and always supports the raw enthusiasm of the young fellows.
There were about 20 consultants at East Lancs and a lot of them were from our country. Mr Sarin was our chirpy consultant who used to remember his Jaipur days as a registrar. He is an excellent Arthroplasty surgeon who makes things look simple and straightforward. Mr Mohan and Mr Kamath also showed their fine skills in Arthroplasty and allowed us to scrub and partake in the process. Mr Saikia, is the senior most orthoapaedic surgeon who not only shared his experiences but also used to give us a lift every time, we partied late.
Mr Choudry, is the clinical director and helped us have access to the theatres and permissions. He is a fine arthroplasty surgeon and we got to see a lot of hips and knees at his side. Mr Hadi , is a young Shoulder and upper limb surgeon with great skills and allowed some of it to rub it on to us. Mr Younis is an exceptional Hand surgeon and we got to see his expertise in plating of Scaphoid. Mr Zubairy and Mr Shiv Aithal showed us some skills in the field of Foot and Ankle. I also had the opportunity to refine my skills in Knee arthroscopy under Mr Goyal and Mr Maryinessen. Dr Kiran Ramesh, is an upcoming Upper limb surgeon, trying to carve a niche for himself and he was our coffee mate in the theatres, helping us in every way during the fellowship
After the working hours, me and Dr Sethi used to walk all around crisscrossing Burnley, enjoying the picturesque beauty of Lancashire and Yorkshire. We did a few day trips to Manchester and enjoyed the downtown. Lake district and Windermere trips were the most beautiful trips and I decided to go there again to relive the serenity when my family joined me later(Thanks Mr Sarin, for you planned it for us)
We did a bit of tourism in London and followed it up by shopping in Leeds, as we assembled for a delectable ecstasy in orthopaedics, ISKSAA Leeds. At the end of the conference, we flew back from Heathrow carrying sweet memories of my second favourite country ENGLAND.
