ISKSAA Lancashire Travelling Fellowship 2019 Report
I would like to thank Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj, Prof. Dr. Split Maini and ISKSAA for selecting me for the prestigious ISKSAA Lancashire Travelling Fellowship for the year 2019.
My fellowship was of 4 weeks at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust from 16th September to 12th October 2019 with Mr. Makaram Srinivasan as my mentor.
I reached London Heathrow airport on 15th September and travelled by train to Victoria station and then to Blackburn by bus. I had already arranged for my
accommodation by AirBnb in Blackburn near to Royal Blackburn hospital.
Next day, after the occupational health check up, my fellowship started at the Orthopaedics and Traumatology department in Royal Blackburn Hospital. I was introduced
by Mr. Srinivasan to Mr. Q Choudhry who is the director of Orthopaedics there and a very nice person. I was given a schedule to follow by Miss Sarah, secretary of
Mr. Srinivasan, who was a very helpful lady. I had to attend trauma theatres at Royal Blackburn hospital and elective surgeries at Burnley General Hospital.
I used to travel between them by a shuttle bus for the hospital staff between the two hospitals which was scheduled at regular intervals throughout the day.
Mr. Srinivasan is primarily an upper limb surgeon. He is a master of shoulder arthroscopy and reverse shoulder surgery. His colleague Mr Rajesh Sarin
is a very friendly person and primarily a lower limb surgeon. He is an excellent knee arthroplasty surgeon and I was fortunate enough to assist with him
in multiple primary and complex TKR cases.
During my fellowship I saw and assisted in a lot variety of elective cases like shoulder arthroscopy, knee and ankle arthroscopy, knee
replacements, reverse shoulder arthroplasty, rotator cuff repair, labral repair, MCP joint replacement etc as well as learnt a lot of new tips
and tricks in complex trauma cases. The theatre staff was very friendly and helpful and they used to inform me and allow me to switch between theatres
whenever a interesting case would start in another one. I used to also attend Trauma meet on Thursday mornings in Royal Blackburn Hospital with Mr. Srinivasan
and Mr Sarin and Outpatient Clinics with Mr. Srinivasan, Mr. Kamath and Mr. Sarin.
I used to get off on weekends and did a lot of sightseeing during that period. I visited Edinburgh, Scotland in the first weekend for 2 days.
It was a beautiful place with breathtaking landscape and many castles and interesting places to visit. Following weekends, I visited Lake district and
Blackpool pleasure beach which was a fun park. Both these visits were of 1 day duration but gave me a memory of lifetime.
I left for London at the end of my fellowship and stayed there for 3 more days and did a lot of
tourism and shopping before flying back to India.
I again want to thank ISKSAA and the whole team for giving me this opportunity. This fellowship
was very useful for me to sharpen my surgical skills and give a boost to my professional growth.
