REPORT
ISKSAA BOSTAA TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP 2018, UK
06/06/2018 - 22/06/2018
At the outset I would like to thank Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj and Prof. Lalit Maini for aligning with BOSTAA and giving me an opportunity to do this prestigious fellowship. It was indeed a great learning experience.
I was selected for BOSTAA fellowship along with Dr. Yashvanth. Unfortunately, I couldn’t attend the earlier part of the fellowship due to some personal reasons. Both BOSTAA and ISKSAA were kind enough to understand my situation and allowed me for a late start. On 10/06/18, I reached London and joined my co-fellow Dr. Yashvanth. We were given a detailed itinerary for the entire week well in advance to plan our accommodation and travel. Our fellowship was based mainly at University College London. There are a number of decent hotel accommodation around the hospital, however it is advisable to book well in advance otherwise you will find yourself short of options and the rates will increase. We stayed in a hotel around Euston square. The entire week stay in London was an academic feast for us.
We observed surgeries with Dr. Sam Oussedik and Dr. RahulPatel at University College of London. Both of them are internationally renowned surgeons. Dr. Oussedik is primarily focused on computer navigation TKR while Dr. Patel does loads of arthroscopic knee surgeries, including multiligament reconstruction, cartilage defect. We could see some uncommonly donearthroscopic knee surgeries like cartilage defect surgeries alongwith routine surgeries.
We also observed surgeries with Dr. Carlos Cobiella and David Sweetenham outside UCL. Dr. Cobiella is primarily a shoulder surgeon and does lots of interesting surgeries. Besides routine Rotator Cuff repair, we also saw couple of chronic AC Joint reconstructions with newer implant options like Lockdown. We had the opportunity to see patellofemoral replacement with Dr. Sweetenham.
After an eventful stay at London, we headed to Sheffield and Chesterfield to spend some time with Dr. Fazal Ali. He is primarily a Paediatric Sports Medicine Surgeon and does a wide variety of cases including Paediatric ACL reconstruction, Medial and Lateral Patella Instability. We also got a chance to do a site visit to an implant manaufacturing facility for Neoligaments, Xiros at Leeds, UK.
To conclude our fellowship, we attended a very well organized ISKSAA Leeds conference. We also presented our fellowship report to Dr. Sanjeev Anand. Overall it was a life time experience. I would like to thank all the mentors and ISKSAA team for giving me this opportunity.
