ISKSAA IMRI FELLOWSHIP 2016 REPORT

To begin with, first of all I would like to thanks Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj, Prof. Lalit Maini, Prof. Jegan Krishnan & all esteemed doctors and members involved with this ISKSAA-IMRI fellowship program for providing us such a great and splendid opportunity.
As soon as we landed in Adelaide, Australia, we were simply amazed by the local hospitality of IMRI members. Mr. Nicholas Kerrison, CEO IMRI himself came to pick us from airport and then he dropped us at our home for next 4 weeks i.e. at 17, Laffers road, Belair. He has put his every effort to make us feel comfortable. Not only has he arranged all the essential stuff required during our stay at home, but also he took us to an Indian Supermarket where we can have some Indian products. The home provided to us was very comfortable and well equipped with every necessary amenity. It was situated in hills of Glenalta and was well connected to the city by bus and train.
Next morning on our 1st day of fellowship program, we met Mrs. Sarah Sain, who was the chief co-ordinator of our fellowship program. She picked us from our home and dropped to Flinders private hospital where we met Dr. Meng Ling. On our 1st day of fellowship, we were apprised by the work culture of Australian hospitals and expertise of the Dr. Meng Ling.
As the fellowship progressed, we got an opportunity to work with different surgeons who are expert in various sub-speciality of orthopaedics namely Arthroscopy, Arthroplasty and revision surgeries of shoulder, knee and hip. We met great surgeons like Dr. Liptak, Dr. Mario Penta, Dr. Ling, Dr. Darren Waters, and Dr. Aman Sood apart from Prof. Jegan Krishnan. We were posted in 4 different hospitals namely Flinders private hospital, Western hospital, Memorial hospital and Ashford hospital. The best part of our fellowship was that we got an opportunity to scrub in the surgeries with few surgeons which not only enhanced our learning experience but also kept our interest high during all the surgeries. We were fortunate enough to assist variety of surgery, which nearly completes the spectrum of commonly performed surgeries around hip, knee and shoulder in arthroscopy and arthroplasty. We experienced surgeries like hip arthroscopy, reverse shoulder arthroplasty, navigation assisted TKR, revision TKR, THR, latajet procedure, rotator cuff repair, bankarts repair and many more. We witnessed around 120 surgeries during our tenure and it was really a rewarding and enriching experience to say the least. All the surgeons were keen to discuss their cases and also asked us about the options we have in our minds, which really helped in making the discussion interactive and interesting.

The best part of the fellowship apart from knowledge sharing and surgeries is Dr. Jegan Krishnan, who always gave individual attention to our learning procedure, taking personal care in teaching, supervising our learning and our comfortable stay during the fellowship, He also invited us for a dinner and a lunch that too in Indian restaurant, so that we should feel homely. Apart from Dr. Jegan Krishnan, other surgeons were also very compassionate about the work and simultaneously gave individual attention to us. Moreover, at times surgeons showed a very kind gesture by dropping us to our next planned destination whether it was our home or another hospital.
Moreover, we enjoyed our stay at Adelaide, done some wonderful activities like wine tasting tour, Kangaroo Island tour etc. during the weekends, which enhanced and enriched our fellowship in a different sphere. Not only we have learnt one of the expert techniques of surgeries but also we were amazed by the way surgeons and staff communicated with the patient. We witnessed such a polite, affectionate behaviour of every surgeon towards their patient and hospital staff, which we feel is one the finest way to treat our patients. To add to our learning was the different work culture and a totally different idea of living the life, motto of which is to work hard but simultaneously live your hobbies too.
1 day before our planned departure, Dr. Jegan Krishnan and his complete team organized a dinner cum valedictory function for us, in a famous Italian Restaurant. That was a great day when we discussed on different topics with surgeons and met with many members and even students working in IMRI. At the end we were awarded our certificates by Dr. Jegan Krishnan. Then, we came back to India with new ideas, pleasant memories and knowledge that have helped us for becoming more mature surgeon.
Overall this wonderful and cherished opportunity provided by Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj, Prof. Maini and their team ISKSAA, made further special by the paternal guidance of Prof. Jegan Krishnan, was one of the best thing that happened to us. Apart from clinical and surgical knowledge, we got to learn a different sphere and stupendous paradigm of living which would surely go a long way in shaping my academic and professional career.

We sincerely thank everyone at ISKSAA and IMRI for providing me for this marvellous opportunity.
