Fellowship Report BASK - ISKSAA Travelling Fellowship 2014-15
I was lucky that I got selected for the ISKSAA BOA Travelling Fellowship. My sincere thanks to Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj and Lalit Maini for making this possible through ISKSAA.
I reached Leeds on 13th September morning and found my accommodation in the doctors mess of the St James hospital which is a part of the Leeds General Infirmary.
Dr. Sanjeev Anand who helped throughout the process for visa and travel arrangements was there to see us well settled in the accommodation .
On the 14th morning we had to visit the HR dept to sort out formalities prior to starting our fellowship. Here I wish to highlight few points which would be of help for future fellows .
1st- make sure you send copies of 2 reference letter, passport and police clearance well in advance.
2nd- It is possible to get accommodation in the Doctors mess hence try for it from the beginning.
3rd – carry all the originals of the copies with you to avoid delay in starting the course.
As the BOA conference was from 15th to the 18th Sept, Dr. Sanjeev Anand took us along with him to Liverpool. The whole conference was an academic feast where we did get to meet many eminent Indian doctors practicing in England. On 18th Dr. Anand took us to the Smith & Nephew workshop in Yorkshire where we practiced Arhtroscopic PCLR and Meniscal transplant in cadavers. From 19th we started our visit to Chapel Allerton Hospital which is dedicated to elective orthopaedic surgeries .
Dr. Sanjeev had taken great pain to arrange for us to be able to observewide range of surgeries performed by him and his colleagues. So for the next 10 days except Saturday and Sunday it was time well spent observing arthroscopic ACLR, Meniscal repairs , PLC repair, hip arthroscopy, TKR, Unicondylar knee replacements, THR and Ankle arthroscopies. I particularly had interest in Spine surgeries, so Dr Sanjeev Anand specifically arranged and asked for permisson from Dr Nigel Gummerson and Dr Rao at Leads General Infirmiry for observing Spine Surgeries.
On the whole it was worth spending 2 weeks at Leeds and I thank Dr. Sanjeev for all the help during our stay at Leeds. Weather was awesome at that part of year. It was usually sunny at the mornings and raining in the noon and evenings. So we used to have a lot of fun and travelling dring the free time of evening and at the weekends.
