ISKSAA SPORTSMED FELLOWSHIP 2015 ADELAIDE SOUTH AUSTARLIA 14/03/2016 - 28/03/2016

At the outset I would like to thank ISKSAA President Dr.Pushpinder Bajaj and Chairman Prof. Lalit Maini and whole ISKSAA executive board for considering us for this prestigious fellowship. It was a once in a life time experience for us.

Next Day On Monday 5th May We started our Fellowship programme when we met our Senior Clinical Director and Professor, Prof. Krishnan at Flinders Medical Centre. We had a opportunity to see reverse shoulder arthroplasty by expert hands in a 89 year old female patient for three part fracture proximal humerus. He gave us the tips and tricks of how to avoid complications in reverse shoulder arthroplasty in a beautiful manner. We then saw a couple of knee scopies and a unipolar cementedarthroplasty. In the afternoon we had a visit to Belair National Park with Mr. Donald. In the Evening Professor Krishnan arranged a welcome dinner for us at the legacy of India, Blackwood.

Myself and Dr.Yashavanth Kumar C from Bangalore reached Adelaide on morning of 13th march. As per instructions from the personal secretary of our mentor Dr.Nick Wallwork we checked into Hotel Watson, where a beautiful 2 bedroom room suit with balcony was pre booked for us. The check in was smooth and without any hassels. We had a whole day off,so after freshening up we looked around the city and found it to be a mesmerizing place.

From the start of first working day Dr.Wallwork used to pick us up from the hotel in the morning and would drop us back after the day was over.

At the sports med hospital we had a chance to visit the clinic with Dr. Wallwork and observe him examining patients with various upper limb pathologies viz. rotator cuff tears ,sub acromial bursitis, impingement syndrome, compression neuropathies (non traumatic posterior interosseous nerve entrapment was something we saw for the first time),osteoarthritic shoulders and various hand joints. We had good interactive discussions with Dr Wallwork regarding management of all patients and he was kind enough to discuss at length various treatment modalities for his patients.

The operation theatres at sportsmed hospital were a state of the art in technology and well equipped with staff and instruments and we got a chance of observing quite a varied number of upper limb surgeries namely rotator cuff repairs, subacromial decompressions ,reverse total shoulder surgeries, arthroplasty of small hand joints, radial head replacement, decompression of posterior interossseous nerve entrapment.

Dr. Wallwork had introduced us to other surgeon colleagues as well so we had a chance to observe other surgeons operating for knee arthroscopy, bankarts repair ankle arthroscopies and ankle fixations.

Once a week Dr. Wallwork used to have a clinic at outskirts of Adelaide at a place called Morphett vale at Noarlunga where he used to take us along with him. After the completion of clinic there he used to show us around the beaches and hills of Adelaide and buy lunch for us. On the last working day of fellowship Dr. Wallwork took us out for dinner along with his family, an evening which will remain in our hearts forever.

We also attended clinical meetings for problem case discussions in the morning.

We also had done a small retrospective study on management of Glenoid Dysplasia and formation of algorithm for treatment and same has been submitted to Journal of Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery (Manuscript ID: JAJS-D-16-00017)

Apart from great academic experience we also visited most of the tourist spots in and around Adelaide. Among the places visited were Adelaide ZOO, Adelaide Oval, Adelaide Hills, Cleland Park (Kangaroos and Koalas), Glenelg and Christie Beeches etc. Shopping at Adelaide central business district was amazing experience.

All in all the ISKSAA sportsmed fellowship was a memorable experience for us and we thank Dr. Wallwork for his wonderful hospitality and also the executives of ISKSSA for giving us opportunity to be a part of the fellowship.

Yours sincerely
