ISKSAA BOA TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIPS

I thank Dr.Pushpinder Bajaj and Dr.LalitMaini for having selected me for ISKSAA BOA Travelling Fellowship 2015 and Dr Sanjeev Anand for organising our whole fellowship programme. The fellowship was conducted during September 2016.

I reached Belfast on 13th September morning to attend the BOA meeting and Dr Sanjeev Anand helped us in every aspect for arranging visa , hospital accommodation and travel ticket to Belfast. The whole conference was an academic feast where we did get to meet many eminent Indian doctors practicing in England. We met with Mr.Tim Wilton president of BOA and attended all the lectures. A dinner was organised and we metDr.LalitMaini and had a chat with him. As advised by DR.Anand we went for a Belfast tour and visited places like Giant’s Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge and Castle, all these places were breath-taking.

We reached Leeds on 18th and Dr.Anand briefed us on the 2weeks plan. The next day morning we had to visit the HR dept to sort out formalities prior to starting our fellowship.

On the same day afternoon, we went with Dr.Anand and attended his private cases where he demonstrated anterior approach for hip steroid infiltration including hip air arthrogram. The next day we reached hospital and were introduced to the Chapel Allerten hospital staff.

For the next 10 days we spent observing arthroscopic ACL repair, Meniscal repairs, Arthroscopic chondroplasty with micro fracture, hip arthroscopy, Primary TKR and THR. We attended OP along with Dr.Anand were he showed us few clinical examination and how out - patients were being managed and treated.

He introduced us to Ankle and Shoulder surgeons were we observed Arthroscopic capsular release, subacromion decompression, revision subacromion decompression, rotator cuff repair, total ankle replacement and ankle arthroscopy with brostrom ligament reconstruction.

During our fellowship period, we were able to clear our doubts with the esteemed faculty at NHS Leeds, and they were all very kind enough to do so. We attended the department meeting, where they discussed about the previous week operated cases. For difficult cases to be operatedthey discussed about the various surgical options available. It gave us opportunity to meet the hip, knee, ankle and shoulder fellowship trainees.

For last part of our fellowship Dr.Anand arranged for a cadaveric shoulder arthroscopy at smith and nephew institute, York. It is a oneday programme, here we learnt a lot about basics and recently introduced instruments in shoulder arthroscopy.

On the whole it was worth spending 2 weeks at Leeds.I feel more enlightened and more confident in dealing with orthopaedic problems, after having learnt so much during this fellowship. Apart from gaining knowledge in the subject it also helped us to visit other country and get to know its culture, for which I am once again thankful to team ISKSAA, Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj, Dr Lalit Maini and Dr. SanjeevAnand for providing me with this wonderful opportunity.
