  • This is indeed our pleasure to visit to United Kingdom and work with some of the stalwarts in the field of Joint Replacement and Arthroscopy at NHS Buckinghamshire. And many thanks to ISKSAA for providing us such a wonderful opportunity.
  • We were two fellows who were selected by ISKSAA through interviews held at ISKSAA Chandigarh conference 2017.Inteterviews were held by international faculty and it was a transparent process by which we were informed about the selection.
  • Dr. Lalt Maini and Dr. Shibu Krishnan were our coordinators for the fellowship. We were constantly in touch with them via e-mails.We did all the formalities and paperwork in consultation with our coordinators.
  • We arrive in London on 2nd June 2018 and visited NHS Buckinghamshire the next day. Initially we had booked our accommodation at NHS Campus: however we were not happy with the accommodation provided to us and after consultation with the NHS authorities we shifted to the nearby hotel which was walking distance away from NHS. Accomodation was confortable and food was good.
  • Hospitals visited: We visited 03 hospitals during our tenure
    • High Wycombe Hospital
    • Stoke Mandivle Hospital
    • Chiltrern Hospital

High Wycombe was the parent unit where we spent maximum time while we did went to Stroke Mandivile Hospital couple of times which was the smaller unit and was under care of our consultant Dr. Shibu Krishnan. We also had fantastic opportunity to visit The Chiltren Hospital which was the private Hospital were our consultant would work and we must thank Dr. Krishnan that he made special attempt to make us see more number of cases even in his private.

  • Consultants worked with: We had wonderful time with various consultants and they all were very helpful and knowledgeable in their respective fields. We had an excellent platform where we could discuss various topics with stalwarts like Dr. Shibu Krishnan, Dr. Johnstone, Dr. Hagana, Dr. Baring
  • Surgeries observed: We had extensive exposure of various surgeries such as
    • Primary Knee Arthroplasty
    • Primary Hip Arthroplasty(cemented and uncemented)
    • Revision Hip Arthroplasty
    • Unicondylar Knee Arthroplasty
    • First stage Revision(Hip)
    • Second stage Revision(Hip)
    • Knee Arthroscopy - Meniscus, ACL, Chondral lesion

We also could observe surgeries such as Ankle Arthrodesis with Hind foot arthrodesis Nail,Fracture Surgeries Peri prosthetic fracture of femur fixed with NCB plate,Fracture both bone forearm-ORIF with plating, Closed reduction of both bone forearm in children..

  • Learning: We could also imbibe Meticulous pre operative planning , Different implants used in various surgeries ,Protocols for every surgery, Post operative protocols, Rehabilitation protocols, Data entry for the National Registry of Joints. It was quite an amazing experience and we wish to follow some of these principles and protocols in India.
  • Suggestions: Overall it was a satisfactory trip; however we wish submit few points which can improve the recruitment rate and interest of fellows like us.
    • It was an observatory fellowship and we think that it would have been better in future if ISKSAA can organize fellowships in which fellows are allowed to scrub up as well.
    • Duration of fellowship: was small .It can be made for at least 03 months by which time all possible cases can be seen by the fellows. Accomodation: it was quite a expensive trip as we had to organize our stay at near by hotel. It is our humble suggetion that accomodation of fellows should be taken care by ISKSAA
