ISKSAA Netherlands Fellowship

(23-06-2015 to 10-07-2015) Three weeks under Dr. Jaap Willems

My profound gratitude to Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj and Dr. Lalit Maini for the delightful experience of a travelling fellowship with Dr. Jaap Willems. It was highly an honour to meet Dr. Jaap Willems, a renowned shoulder surgeon with unraveling humility and extraordinary ingenuity at imparting clinical and surgical skills to others. He certainly demystified shoulder surgery to me and Dr.Gautam Gupta, my co-fellow.

He graciously rented a tastefully furnished apartment for us in the heart of Amsterdam and provided us with OV chipcard to enable us get around the city with ease. We were warmly received by the members of staff of DC LairesseKliniek. It was amazing assisting Dr. Willems in the operating room. He taught us a variety of procedures step by step and even allowed us perform parts of the procedures. Over the next two weeks we assisted and observed a variety of arthroscopic and open shoulder procedure which included Latissimus Dorsi Tendon transfer, open Laterjet, Rotator cuff repairs, hemi-shoulder arthroplasty and a total shoulder arthroplasty. I got to observe the new technique of ACL repair (Mathys' Ligamys) with Dr. Kooijmanand Ankle arthroscopy with Dr. Boustrah. He also arranged for us to visit OLVG hospital where we scrubbed in with Dr. Derek van Deurzenwhile performing arthroscopic shoulder surgeries. Dr.Willems is a great teacher; during his clinics he helped us sharpen our clinical acumen and taught us many concepts and fundamentals about shoulder pathologies.

I travelled through the city tram network meeting exciting people and sightseeing the beautiful city. As an art lover, one of my favourite places I visited was the Van Gogh museum. My most memorable social outing was the boat ride with Dr. Willems. We went through the city's canals and got a breathtaking view of the whole of Amsterdam. Later on that day, he took us to an Indonesian restaurant where we were treated to their spicy cuisine. We were fortunate enough to attend the Utrecht Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty course during the third week of our fellowship. This week long instructional cadaver course had participants from over 21 countries. I got the opportunity to perform several arthroscopic and open procedures on cadavers using a variety of implants with technical assistance from the international faculty members at the course. I also enjoyed the evening social events organized during the course to enable participant interactions with the international faculty members. I met Prof. Ken Yamaguchi of Washington University School of Medicine, USA. It was a great experience. This wrapped up our stay in the Netherlands.

I want to express my sincere heart felt gratitude to Dr. Jaap Willems for his kindness, mentorship and hospitality during our stay in the Netherlands. For me, this was a life changing experience which helped me redefine my perspective on life and career goals. My special thanks to my dear friend and co-fellow Dr. Gautam Gupta, who was a great companion throughout the fellowship. I especially want to thank Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj and Dr.Lait Maini, for the tremendous effort they put in to make these fellowships available to young orthopaedic surgeons. I am proud to identify with ISKSAA, please keep up the good work!
